    Sat newbie learning curve

I've recently bought a technomate TM-1000 CI for ?20 off ebay and with a helping hand from Fearona and a bit of head scratching , managed to get a 70% signal strength and quality through my redundant sky dish.
I've also managed to load the Nov 2009 softcam and Sept 2009 patch to it.
Having then done a scan , i can watch channels 1821-1637 on Hotbird , but the rest are scambled .

Feeling quite chuffed with myself so far , finding it good fun !
Can i open any ppv channels ? and how ?
If i carry on learning and enjoying it , i'm hoping Santa supplies me some improved kit for Crimmy !
Any help on where to go from here would be appreciated !

Hi again Mate , i've downloaded (or think i have) the latest softcam from the downloads section dated 14/11/2009 .
Apart from it opening the channels , how can i check it's downloaded to the reciever ?
My current system information shows :

            s/w version : 3.04p (sept 17 2009)
            h/w version : 1.11
            Boot version : 2.10 (8.10)
            ch version : oct 06

Do i need to do a factory reset prior to loading the softcam as you do on a starview cable viewer prior to a firmware download.
            Thanks again .

Thanks for that Mate , no it's not , it's just an old sky dish , and that answers another question for me , does it mean with the dish and reciever i've got i'm not going to view a lot ? , in which case , i might plunge myself a bit deeper on my credit card , for a few brackets , alloy scaffold pole and a motorised dish , this being what i need to join the sat club with any cred , from what i've read .
A lot more to it than cable recievers !
God help me ! , will i need some help then !

hi melloned, new to sat myself but can answer yer dish issue.with a standard dish yer gonna get next to nothing and certainly not thor.motorised is the way to go and it opens up all sorts of goodies.
someone with more knowledge of your area will confirm but you'll need at least an 80cm dish but maybe best to plump for a 1metre dish.
not sure on yer reciever but it should be ok with the right patches etc to open a fair bit.i started with a techno 3300 and that opened more than enough.Get the basics first(dish etc) and get used to things before you splash out on new recievers. As you say its a learning thing and there's a lot more to it than cable. But its all good fun.

Thanks for that Mate , as with many folk , cash is a bit tight at the mo , so i'm going to have a week or two fooling around with what i've got , then go back to basics .
I'm looking for a sturdy 2.5mtr alloy scaffold pole , to replace the not so sturdy one i've erected , as it's only one i knocked together with my welding set , and some old 30mm dia steel tube ( it sways a little !) , plus two good mounting brackets ,
and get the whole thing good and square , having read on the forum , i'm wasting my efforts otherwise .
