Humming noise from tv after adding a second satellite feed

A friend has a sky dish and wanted to add a second sat box upstairs so he got an independent installer to connect another cable from the dish. It was working ok for a couple of hours but now he has an annoying humming noise coming from both tv's. He called the installer over again who told him its your scart leads causing the problems. So he called me and I bought a couple of different scarts to try.
Still the same humming problem, I messed around with the scarts and noticed that when a second scart going to a dvd players is taken out the humming stops and it starts after putting the scart back in. I'm guessing the installer was correct but this was not a problem before so has anybody come across this problem or got any possible suggestions or reasons why this could be happening?
Also he had a single LNB which was replaced with a new quad LNB

Is something powering up through your scart lead????It sounds like 50cycle so you could possibly be overloading something!!!Cheers Chas.

I thought it would be simple by replacing the lnb to a quad he could get sat in multirooms e.g upto 4 boxes. I thought thats how sky do it.

replacing the lnb should not have caused any problems.I have 3 STBs all running at the same time off a quad lnb with no trouble. It does sound like mains hum but may be difficult to trace.

Do you think it could be dangerous and any cause for concern like a major power cut?

try cutting pin9 or 19 on the scart this will stop the inteference between the equip....cant remember which 1 of the 2 it is so u will have to bugger up 1 of them..

I would not have thought it dangerous, but needs clearing.I"d try what terriers said.do it on a cheap scart to start with.

It certainly sounds like a mains Hum......If he has used poor quality coax it can be picking up a Buzz of a mains cable near to your installation...try swithching things off around the house to see if it goes away, also the idea of using a cheap scart lead to disconnect connected pins is a superb suggestion...our ?1 shop has loads of them in, but you may find its difficult to open the plug as they are normally a sealed unit..It could also be a PSU beginning to break down under load. Good luck with the problem solving

He has a dvd player with his sat box and when you disconnect its scart the humming from the sat box goes away. I tried the scart trick as suggested by terriers, cutting pin 19 just buggers up the scart but with cutting pin 9 the scart still works but the humming is still there. I just pulled the pin out of the scart from both sides but did not open it, when I use a better quality scart the humming sound is lower but still there, I may have to try cutting pin 9 on the quality scart! Worth a risk!?

Also sometimes there is a bar going across the screen.

Is it possible to use composite cables instead to see if it goes away ??

I tried with a component lead but the same problem existed, although the lead was a cheap one. But with a higher quality gold plated scart lead the humming sound is reduced though it was still there. In the end the tv (old 30 inch crt) was replaced with a new hd lcd tv and now the humming is gone from 1 telly. Using the higher quality scart on the other telly has reduced the humming sound making it less annoying and noticeable. Hope this finally sorts it, what a nightmare!!
