If you can get the person on the top floor to agree, then you can also do a top floor installation I suppose. Is there a problem with putting it as high on the wall as your flat goes?

Back to the other question, simple answer is - if the dash can't see it, then the dish can't receive it. Simple as that really. So think of looking up some 22,000 miles into the sky around 4,500 miles south of you , that's what your dish has to do, assuming that you're in the UK.

Maybe get the dish as high on your flat wall as possible.

How far away are the trees and house and how tall are they?
A kind of rule of thumb would be, the distance from the dish to the object should be twice the height of the object.
All depends what satellites you wish to aim at.
Some are higher in the sky than others and you can pick them up even if there is not a lot of distance.
I've seen people installing dishs in small gardens with not a lot of clearance but still picking up Astra and Hotbird fine.
A good program for you is Gorb Track, it will give lots of information on satellite elevation and distance from objects.
Helps you to do some homework.
As for the install, can the dish be put high on a wall?
Or are you down steps in a basement? Has anyone near by got a dish setup?

If you get the building owners permission you can put it up there. If its a local council or RSL then you need ask their permission, if it leasehold then you can ask the permission of the lease owner and the its always nice to ask the person on the top floor as well.

Just to give you an idea, I clear all sateliites with a dish 10m away from a 4.5-5m high obstacle.

no im not down stairs on ground floor i only have the house wall to put the dish on and yes upstairs has a sky dish up. the house is just a standard 2 story house and it is about 12-10 metres away and the tree is about 3 metres shorter metres shorter than the house and is about 8 or so metres away. so do you think i would be ok ?
you sayed A kind of rule of thumb would be, the distance from the dish to the object should be twice the height of the object does that mean i would subtract the height of where i install the dish of the heaight of the object?

Go to dishpointer.com it has a line of sight checker that will give you a semi calculated idea of what you will clear.

                Hi Mario123
That sounds like a big enough tree. Is it just the one tree?
You could place the dish on the far right or left of the wall to compensate.
Will it be a motorised dish you are puting up or a fixed dish?
By the sounds of it you could get away with it, if you can get the dish up 2 to 3 metres on the wall.
Yes you could subtract this from the height of the object.
As Dizzy said, go to dishpointer.com, type in your address and zoom in on the map.
There's a handy tool for measuring distance and height of objects around your property.
                Gorbtrack will do the same.

In the northern hemisphere, the sun is due south at 12 midday. This is helpful when setting up the dish as you would point it due south, from here you should be able to tune in the satellites on the arc (the clark belt).
The satellites are located along an arc to the east and west of the south facing dish.
                      Have a look HERE
