New to Satellite (New SKY subscriber but also have 500S)

Hi guys. So I decided to leave Virgin TV due to the lack of HD content and I joined sky on that crazy cheap deal and have everything they offer.

I get installed on tues march 2nd, but I have a few questions and while Im sure the answers are on the forum, if someone could kindly either link me to the answers I require or answer them themselves, I would be truly grateful.

I have a standard kit being installed, so no motorized dishes etc. I also have a dreambox 500s that was purchased a while ago by mistake but would like to get use from it if theres much point as Ill have the sky hd box anyways.

I would like to tune into as many extra channels by doing the manual frequency scan on the box, so should I ask for the dish to be positioned a certain direction? (my main concern is getting the non-uk televised football matches and maybe some german content for my grandmother, also can these channels be sky+'d?)

Is there a complete list of available channels and the frequencies? (if so where)

I think thats it for now, although any other info regarding these questions and anything else that copuld benefit me before install would be much apreciated.

if you are getting a fixed sky dish installed for a sky package it can only be pointed at 28.2 East and you will only get your package plus the FTA channels.

you will need a seperate motorised dish to get the best out of your 500s for foreign channels.but I"d read up abit more on the forum before commiting to anything. go to www.lyngsat.com for channel info.

      extra channels

hi m8, sky systems are only good for sky as they only have fixed symbol rates/no diseqc contol ect so my advice would be to either get a 90cm/1m motorised dish to go with your dm500s, but if you dont want a big motorised dish then you could get a 60cm fixed dish on [email protected](old sky analogue sat posotion) and use you dm500s. there are plenty of free german channels on this satellite and also with the right set-up and bb connection you would be able to get the extra football matches you want. google c/s and have a good read as this will explain what you need to do as c/s cant be discussed on this or most forums(but there are some). for frequencies and so on have a look at lyngsat/flysat/kingofsat/tracksat, also have a look at lj,s live on sat for the football fixtures. you have a lot of reading and learning to do but with a dm500 it is possible. dont worry about the extra dish as you are allowed 2 by law, 1of up to 1 meter and a second of up to 60cm. anymore questions m8 just ask and you will get the help here on dk. regards mdt

thanks to the both of you for the info. I will have a good read. It may be that sky for me is enough for the time being, but its nice to know I have part of the equipment to get started if I decide to extend my viewing pleasures

Thanks for the info, guys. Satellite is a whole new ballgame for me and I know there is tons of posts on here. The hard part is sorting out the dross and the previous posts in this thread are a brilliant starter for ten.

On 28.2E you get extra channels which are not available with normal sky subscription.

            Setanta Ireland, Setanta sports 1, RTE1 and 2 TV3

All these good for saturday 3PM football kick-off if you are a football fan. But you will need the previously mentioned CS to get these
