welcome to dk thechief, take time to read in the sat section and you will see that its not that difficult to do. get your dish plumb and the set up of box is not much different from cablebox

Thanks Wilf for the quick responce, i have read about a protek9600ip are these any good? also seen a deal on a tm500, but have also read something about the package changing encription soon??????????
Im sure i will be ok with the finer deatils of setups etc , but just need to know which kit choices are the best to head for within budget of course .

      Cheers

the protek, reports are excellent on these boxes but beware of the clone called max1000 thats not to say they are all no good it was reported on here that they have a few connection issues. you would need a motorised dish 1m min to get the best out of it. tm 500 im not familiar with but again they are reported to be up there with the dreambox 500s which i have and very pleased with. both are linux boxes so this would allow you to do so much more than the protek which just connects to there own server.

Hmm their own server ...so i assume if this server went down i wouldnt be able to connect to it???
With a linux box would i therefore be able to change to different lets say "providers" at will. Oh and thanks again Wilf!!!!!!!!!!!

the motorised dish is what picks up the signal so when you decide you want to chage to different sats it will move accordingly

So what advantage if anything do you gain by having a linux box, or is that edging towards a touchy subject? i did say i was a newbie

linux will allow you to be in control of the box, the protek only shares one way from the server to the box, the linux will allow you to share both ways so you can take shares from another box and share yours back giving you more the channels. it depends on what you want!
