if your after a box thats just plug and play id say go for the protek which has no limit on the s***** access.
if you want a receiver for multi-sat work, feeds and putting your own c-line in then id say go for the spiderbox. regards mdt

They both work on a similar basis in that you are primarily connected to a server to gain access to the channels that the box "opens". The spiderbox however also opens quite a few channels via patch.

In terms of spec the spiderbox appears to be better. In terms of what they open spiderbox offers more and also on price the box wins hands down for initial outlay. The gift channels are meant to last 12 months no one is clear what happens after that but come circa November we will find out.

The protek 9700 to the best of my knowledge doesnt have a 12 month restriction. The protek 9600 is very good i can vouch for that. By and large the server is stable. That said any of these boxes are a risk as they could, in theory, go down at any point. Nothing is guaranteed.

Really boils down to personal preference.
