    Tree

I'm a complete noob to the sat game and I'm thinking about installing a sat dish just for freesat but I've got a 30ft beech about 30ft away from the side of my house. I would put the dish about 16ft high.
I know the obvious thing is to try it but I wondered if anyone would care to share their experiences.
The dish I've got in mind is 65cm

If you go to dishpointer and put in your details it will show you line of site to your required satellite and also any obstacles in the way (it uses google earth).

the dish needs to be twice the distance away as the obstuction is high.so if you put dish 16ft high that would mean 14ft of tree to clear and you would then need to be 28ft away so you would just make it.but dont forget trees grow!!

Thanks for replies.I wonder what a sky engineer (or any professional sat fitter) would do in marginal cases.

trim the tree back ?? if that's an option. I have to trim one of mine to get 39 east onwards during the summer

cant do it its on council land although I think they're gonna come round and have a look as I told them it's dangerous!Anyway I put the dih up and cant't get any channels although I'm getting signal strength upto 60% but signal quality is only up to 15%.As I said I'm a complete novice but I think it's pointing in right direction ( looked at neighbors and dishpointer etc)so I think I should have got something.Don't know whether to get a satfinder or think about moving it to another spot-which would be very inconvenient

paint 3 white hoops around the trunk, start the first one about 3ft up from the base, this is what councils do when beech trees have fungus infections that require them to be cut down..

get a cheap sat beeper slx/chess type are good enough.its not as easy to find the sat you are looking for as people think you really have to search the sky to find a signal pointing it in the right direction is just a starting point.
