    New satellite receiver for newbe

Hello everyone. I was hoping to know what is the best receiver to purchase to get started. I'm on the west coast of ireland and am curious to know what's out there apart from sky tv (more so as a hobby). I only have the sky box and dish at the moment but am looking to invest in an alternative with motorised dish. I am about average at the computer but know very little about linux. Any recommendations?
    P.s. Great site

As you already have S*y dish if I was you i would get myself clone dm600. By the time you have got it working properly you should have some idea if sat is for you without wasting too much money.

There are lots of boxes mate it really depends on what you are after.

Linux boxes are simple mate to flash and operate. You will have to read up a bit admittedly but if you look at the stickys in the cable section or sat section they explain all the tricks/tips to get them up and running.

The clone dreamboxes are very popular. The 518s is the new improved version and can be bought for ?50 from satronics. The dm 800 is the hd version.

Technomates are also fairly popular tm 500/600. The tm 800 is the hd version but its in its infancy and has a few flaws.

For plug and play boxes the spiderbox/protek 9600 offer good value for money.

You will need an internet connection to get the most out of satellite mate - google cardshare and will be revealed.

Remeber, we always refer people to cardsharing but never remind them that it is highly illegal as you are pirating TV from more than 1 company!

As for your box choice you need to tell us what you intend to do with it, ie: record, use as 'server'... etc

I take you intend to Cardshare? Any BB internet speed is sufficient, the data is very small.

I intend to use it as a receiver mainly. A bit of recording but not really interested in using it as a server.

Do you intend to use it for CS purposes?

Just after googling that and wouldn't have any interest in that. Any more ideas about start up kit? Home use only, no network connection. Standalone system really.

You will really need a Subscription of some sort to watch anything of much interest then

What kinda of programming do you really want?

get a copy of "what satellite & digital tv" from the newsagent plenty of ads to read and if you go on some of the web sites you will see all the gear available.
if you want to keep it really simple but still give plenty to play with you will need a wall or ground mount,a motor,a dish, single universal lnb, cable & f-plugs and the set top box of your choice non linux is easiest and would suit from what you say.you can buy the lot as an outfit or buy single items here & there.
all the information to set up is available on this site.
