Ok, i am wanting to update my sky card...Its in official STB on Sky 1...do i leave box in standby or not ??

sly uk card will update from 20days before entitlements run out i usually do it 7 days before leave it in overnight and bingo. any encrypted channel will do buti use sly sport 1 or any movie channel. turn box off when you remove card specially if its connected to phone. thats always worked for me over last 2 yrs. new countermeasure about to be activated on this card soon i think.

You don't have to wait for an Update you can force an Update, Place the card into the Sky Receiver and follow.
1) Locate the button on the front of the Receiver, named "Back Up".
2) Press and hold down the "Back Up" button...
3) WHILE HOLDING IT DOWN, disconnect then reconnect the power to the receiver (do not release the back-up button yet).
4) About 20 seconds after reconnecting power, all four coloured lights will illuminate on the front of the receiver.
If the TV is switched to Sky a message will also appear on screen.. "Updating System Software".
5) Only after the four lights illuminate and the message appears should you release the back-up button.
6) After about 10 minutes the reciever will return to "standby" (ie. red LED only).
7. Leave the receiver in standby for 1 minute as it carries out a self check.
8). Switch receiver out of standby (green LED illuminates).
9) The receiver will take a few minutes "Searching For Listings".
This will update the firmware of the receiver and any card updates you have missed.Comment

Does the box need to be connected to a phone line for this forced update to work ??

No m8 no phone line required,
The update is carried out via Satellite, there is a constant stream provided for updating receivers & cards.
It can take up to 20min to compleat.
This updates normally takes place at 4-5 o clock @ night once a month or so, most people never see all the lights come on when the receiver when is updating or are aware of it.
The instructions above will force an Update to the receiver updating the Firmware and card, and fix any bugs the receiver is carrying.Comment

Well i have tried the forced update on my Grundig skydigibox, and no coloured light came on the front of the display...is this forced update only for sky+ boxes ?? I did try it exacly how you said 3 times, and it did nothing everytime.....Here is a piccy of my box.
The 4 lights on the front of the box did not come on either.....bizarreComment

Just hold down Backup Button on the front of the receiver then pullout the power cord from the back and pop it back in again Keep the Backup button pressed untill all the lights come on & the tv screen tells you System is updating...
I works on all Sky Digital receivers....Comment

i update my card whenever it gets below 30 days, it takes 2 minutes in the box to update

I really appreciate your help....Maybe my digibox is faulty ?? It will not do as Alun says..no lights come on, even after pressing the back up button for 1 minute or so...My box is running the latest version firmware etc...i wonder if its because i use a loop through method on my coax from the dish ?? As the cable is connected through the TM600 before it gets to the digibox ( just a thought that there is something not allowing the signal to update the card ?? ) Maybe it will not update as the box is running the latest version ?? I have also seen this information on the tinternet, and it does clarify what you are saying.....As i am a recent customer to Sly tv, my entitlements ran out on the first time and i had to ring them up.....Then it stopped working again ( due to no fault of my own )....last month my card also stopped clearing channels ( as did so many other members ) and i needed a new card from Sly....so i am getting a bit annoyed that my card will not even update in the original box ! I did use CCcam 2.1.3 to update card, but i am not sure the problem is fixed with cards getting ruined by it....God knows why its not happeneing.....Kindest regards
p.s do you think it will NOT update firmware on box if latest version is already installed ?? Thats why my box will not do it ??

Right..i have found this on another website...
To update your firmware, you must ensure that you have a VERY GOOD signal. A weak signal and/or corrupted upgrade can render your Digibox a little lump of scrap metal...
The procedure is as follows:
Unplug the box. Count to thirty.
Press and hold down the back up button on the front panel (not the remote control).
Plug the box back in, with back up still held.
After a few moments all four of the indicators will light up.
You can let go of the 'back up' button now. :-)
The upgrade process is 'expected' to take around fifteen minutes. It took me just six, but maybe that was good luck.
DO NOT TOUCH THE BOX!!!
Seriously, don't touch it, don't alter anything, don't unplug it, and if you get a power failure - you're probably buggered.
When the upgrade is complete, the indicators will return to the normal 'standby' mode. Personally I'd have liked the box to switch itself on and go to the system information screen or something, but I guess that is too much like being useful...
I was not waiting for the box to power down completely before reconnecting the suppy..
