Which receiver advice please quite a few questions.

    Hi Guys great looking site.

Not the most technically mind person so simple answers please

Basically I had a darkbox hd which I used on a fixed dish I decided to motorise the dish and the darkbox lasted for about 2 hours then died after updating the software .

I am on a limited budget about ?200 but I would like hd if possible.

A few details that might help with suggestions.

    I dont want a spiderbox.

I want something that is as future proof as possible.

I want to be able to view numerous encrypted channels (I have to find out how you go about this as I say not technically minded )

I have a limited speed broadband connection 512k max is this going to cause problems with servers etc ?

Something that is idiot proof & bomb proof.

I have heard about linux boxes but dont know anything about them (has to be simple to set up and use)

Any help advice tips clues etc greatfully received.

    Cheers Jim

Future means Linux, Linux means Dreambox, and HD means DM800hd. Can be aquired for ?200 in the Uk from a few shops. Steer clear of the Spiderbox, they might be good for the near future but not the far future

PLus the spiderbox is made by the same people who made your BROKEN darkbox.

he's right about the gift it is one only but it's a good stb
and even not connected to the net or gift it opens more
than any other patched receiver, i dont use the gift and
it works first class in the way the dreambox or other linux boxes
do,and for the price it's good value but as always check all options
before buying anything to get the right item for your needs

              Hi Guys
I appreciate all input but I dont want this to develop in to a flame war as I have seen on other posts.
I dont want a spiderbox so there is no need to discuss it thanks

Look at the dm800, but im not sure 512kb download spped is fast enough to do something which isnt discussed on here. Even then it will still open the same packages as other non linux boxes through keys.

Well i was looking for a similar product and decided that
even though the spiderbox is a great product, great price
when you break it down to how much it costs and what
that works out at a month but i decided on a 800hd clone
just because of the limitless thing that can be done with it.

I was like " a clone " no way...that sounded like Lada bringing out a car like the ford focus and calling it a
ford focus...BUT finding out more about them, checking
where to buy i now await delivery of it any day now.

please let me know how you get on with the 800hd.

Another question maybe I should post it else where but will put it here to begin with.

I am begining to like the idea of a linux box.

Is it complicated to use a linux box are there any idiot proof step by step user guides.

Against forum rules for anything other than the basics to be discussed on linux cs I have been told.

Well my 1st box seemed hard to start with now its a doddle and
from what i'm reading the DB is difficult to start with but
once you get it set up ect i dont see it being a problem.
                        I mean i couldn't even drill a hole in a wall but i drilled 6, set
my pole straight, worked out me longatude/latitute my motor
elevation got it onto the pole, asked a few questions here
and there and when that signal went 90% it was a buzz, sick
as it sounds it felt good.

AND all your help is right here in the search function.

                          hello jps71
you say your not technically minded and want something that is easy to setup and use so I"d make sure you fully understand linux boxes before going down that route because they take a bit of work and are not plug and play/user friendly.and as benny/9 has said keep your options open before putting your money down (even the ones you have discounted at the moment) anyway you will still get all the help you need to set up from the forums.

                            Thanks for the info guys

Already got my dish motor etc set up (fine doing the manual stuff )

I was thinking of linux because of their being future proof or so I have been told.

Not bothered about struggling to learning the theory but on the other hand dont want to screw everything up thats why if any one could point me to some basic guides I will hopefully be more able to make a more considered opinion.

                            Thanks Jim
