    Simple question - receiver advice

Hi guys, I'm a newbie at this cs lark. Following the sad demise of cable here in Leeds last year I've made do with freeview - but enoughs enough!

    I've a (fairly) simple question...

I'm not bothered about a motorised dish or anything like that, not interested in millions of foreign channels either - I'd just like the full range of channels available on 28.2 if you get my drift.

Ideally I'd like HD too - my brother has a DM800 clone which works great, but it costs more than my budget will allow, so my question...

I'm thinking about buying the Openbox S9 HD (which I understand is also known as Solomon and Skybox), but is it easy enough to set up? And what is the EPG like?

Alternatively, I could get the DM500 (clone) and go without HD.

I suppose I'm asking if the pro's of support etc for the 500 are outweighed by the HD but less support of the S9.

    Does that make sense?!!!!

Anyone with experience of the S9 would be great to hear from you

    Cheers

500s are good, if you go for the s9 why not save up the extra and get a dm800s there only about ?145ish v s9 ?125ish?

800 if you can fund it, the 500 if you cant. just based on value and support, both do as it says on the tin.

        Thanks for the reply mate,

I know what you're saying - and tbh I didn't realise that the S9 was nearer the ?120ish mark - I'd seen a couple of posters saying they got them for ?70ish but I can't find any at taht price!

Where can I get an 800 for ?145? I'd prefer to buy from a UK supplier instead of China, but having said that is there any downside to buying from China (apart from not being able to take it back easily!!)

        Cheers

              Nice one lads, thanks.

I think it'll be the 800 then, although I'm really not bothered about the pvr facility -I hardly have time to watch live tv never mind recordings!!

I suppose there's more online support for setting up an 800 than the S9 too.

I think I was worried that there's a kind of "hype" about the 500/800's in the same way people always say "ooh, you MUST get an iphone" - well, I purposely didn't get an iphone so as not to be a sheep!! (rant over!)

@the man - if you could pm that'd be great, cheers

@yamar1 - thanks for your help here and on a couple of other threads. I decided to just start my own thread to keep things tidy...

How is the picture quality? Is it ok in normal def?

I must admit, I've got a virgin hd box atm, and the HD is good, but not AMAZING if you know what I mean?

If I go for the 800 (or 500), are they both futureproof? I got my fingers burned with the eurovox & cable (pesky Nagra 3!) and can't afford for the same to happen again.

I've emailed your mate btw, and he's offered a really good price. I'll ask him about a 500 too I think as a comparison.

                  Cheers.....
