Has sky blocked the viewing card?

Hi, Can anyone please help me? I've moved my Mum, who suffers from dementia, to an over 50s place nearer to where I live. She has Sky @ her old address and has been paying the subscription for 1 mth plus after she moved in..despite not having all of the channels she had at the old address. The previous tenant had sky and so my Mum's box worked. She rang them as something went wrong (she is always disconnecting things & rings someone for help) and they told her to unplug her card. When I went round there, the card no longer worked. Have they done something to stop her watching it, or is it a fault?

I want to buy her a freesat box to save her money, particularly as her sky contract is now up. The area she lives in has a poor reception too and the freeview box I got her is not picking up any channels. Shall I buy this? Also, she does not have a HD ready tv, will this affect what type of freesat box I buy?

Thanking u in advance for your advice...my Mum is only 51, but with her illness, her television is her life.

Sky are blocking Cards that are not in a Valid Receiver when they send out a monthly Card update.

If your Receiver is switched off for an extended period (Around 30 Days) the card is deactivated .

This is been done by Sky as a Antipiracy measure, where subscribers place the card in another receiver Dreambox / Vu+ or other and Share the card between Friends or Family.

If your card has been Deactivated and it has nothing to do with an unpayed subscription or in arrears then you should Contact Sky Directly explain your situation & get the card reactivated.

Many People returning from Holidays this year experianced this deactivation because many had the power Switched off in the Homes when been away or unpluged electronic devices Receivers & Tv sets before leaving on Holidays.

Half of all Calls over the past three months to Sky have been regarding Deactivation of Viewing cards, of course a History of Deactivation will result in total termination of subscription (So C/S users or people with more than one home with Subsriptions should be aware of this ) as Sky think its the way forward in tackeling Piracy .....

If the card was left out the box for a while, it may have missed some entitlement updates and deactivated - Put the card back in the box and it should update overnight and your mum should have her channels back,if it doesn't then a phonecall to Sky will be required to get it updated..

If you want to save your mum money, my advice would be to cancel the Sky subscription, but continue to use the Skybox for the FTA(Free To Air) channels.

Without a Sky subscription she would still receive around 240 free channels, see link below for FTA channels

Non-subscription Channels - All the latest channel information, sign up with Sky
