Well you can check LOS with Satellite Finder / Dish Pointing Calculator with Google Maps | DishPointer.com

As Dave said, Dishpointer is a great site. It helped me work out what satellites I could receive and you can measure distance between any obstacles that may be in your way. So you will know what clearance you need for different satellites.
A really good program to get is Gorbtrack.

Hi standarren. Try Thor at 1 west. Midday sun is due south so if you set your dish to South and move slowly to your right and slowly up and down (bearing in mind that 1 west is a relatively beam, you should find Thor.
Make sure your box is on thor and on the transponder 11862 H 28000 for BBC which is a good strong transponder and of course ...patience.

Standarren, I`ve just read your other threads re motorized and understand that you want to be sure of setting your motorized in the best location.
As dick says thor is the highest ie next to South. When or if you want to go west after finding thor say to 5w then you slightly lower the dish and on to 30 west going right from behind the dish..lower still.
The same applies for going left from your position behind the dish at thor 1w to find say, 5e..again slightly lower the dish and on to 9e 13e 16 etc.
If you are on thor you are at the top of an arc so to go left- east or right- west you are going back down the arc.
                Hope this makes sense.

Gorbtrack takes a little getting used to but is a great program.
You have to download the maps for your country. See Here
Extract the zip file into "C:\Program Files\GorbTrack\Countries" and then run Gorbtrack and choose your country and location in the "Location" Tab, which is down the bottom left on the program.
I used it and dishpointer.com to organize the best place for the dish and what satellites I could pick up and if any houses or trees would effect the clearance needed.

Look for satellite footprint, just add that & you find out what size dish for each satellite.
