Sky+HD Box

I'm new here....
Got a wee query you may be able to help me with.
I've moved into a flat with an existing Sky Dish. A friend gave me a Sky+HD box which works Ok with the free channels, but as I'm sure you know the Recording facilities are blocked.
Is there any way round this, without paying Sky ?10 a month?
