Sky viewers to enjoy The Horticultural Channel from March 2011
            Friday, October 15th 2010

Sky viewers to enjoy The Horticultural Channel from March 2011
The Horticultural Channel will be broadcast on Information TV from next March.
Sky's digital TV subscribers can look forward to tuning into a new gardening-based micro-channel, which is due to launch next year.

The Horticultural Channel will broadcast on the Information TV channel, which can be found at position 166 in the Sky TV planner and 402 on Freesat, when it hits screens for the first time on March 6th 2011, reports Digital Spy.

It will be available to watch from 09:00 on Sunday mornings, with all shows then repeated on Information TV the following Friday.

Sean James Cameron, managing director of Interfusion Films - which has already started producing content for the station - claimed there is demand for a channel that focuses on allotment gardening and people growing their own food.

"There has been a vast gap in the UK gardening television schedules for such a programme, which mainstream broadcasters have ignored," Mr Cameron remarked.

Earlier this month, The Horticultural Channel put out an appeal to gardeners to send in video tips for growing their own produce.

These clips may be included in some of its programmes.

TVN and TPSA join forces for pay-TV and triple-play

TVN and TPSA join forces for pay-TV and triple-play

                    15 Oct 10

Polish broadcaster TVN has signed a long-term agreement with France Telecom-owned incumbent telco Telekomunikacja Polska (TPSA) whereby the latter will provide broadband and telecom services to the subscribers of TVN?s ?n? pay-TV platform and TVN will provide TV channels for TPSA.

TVN will become the main content supplier to TPSA, providing content for its basic TV package and the ?n? service for TPSA?s pay-TV packages. The latter will be harmonised with ?n??s content packaging structure over time.

The pair hope to benefit from the enhanced attraction of joint multi-play offerings, with the ability to sell their services to each other?s customer bases, as well as from cost synergies from joint technical, marketing and sales activities.

Markus Tellenbach, CEO of TVN Group, said: ?We recognise access to high speed broadband internet services are the next mega-trend in Poland and we are very pleased to enter into this co-operation with TP, the leading broadband supplier in Poland.?

Tellenbach said that the ability to sell its services to TPSA?s customer base would offer a significant measurable benefit to TVN. ?This will further strengthen TVN Group?s competitive position in the Polish pay-TV market as we deepen our customer relationships by providing easy access to the widest range of high quality communication services, through bundled multi-play product offers,? he said. ?This, combined with the up-selling potential that ?n? will have on TP Group customer base, increased market presence through TP Group?s points of sales as well as opportunity to further grow ?n? premium Pay-TV customer base, creates additional value for our business.?

Maciej Witucki, CEO of TP Group, said: ?This agreement is an important step in strengthening our multi-play offering. We are pleased to supply our customers with superior content from TVN Group, both its own channels and a selection of third-party productions.? Witucki has also reportedly said that the pair may extend their co-operation beyond the 10-year agreement, and that TPSA aims to expand its TV base from half a million to one million in the medium term as a result of the deal.

The two companies estimate the positive impact of the deal on their EBITDA to amount to approximately PLN100m (?26m) over a five-year horizon.

The agreement also extends to technology, with the pair planning to harmonise their technology platforms and customer service operations over time.

Analysts believe the deal will be beneficial to TVN in particular, allowing it to gain access to TPSA?s two million internet customers, seven million fixed-line clients and 14m mobile clients.

First pictures of UPC Horizon gateway
                      By Julian Clover

Liberty Global chief strategy officer Shane O?Neill has given attendees to the annual TIF conference at Dublin Castle the first glimpse of the Horizon Connected Home Gateway, scheduled for deployment across the UPC network during 2011.

O?Neill outlined the various connected and hybrid TV options already in the market such as Boxee and Google TV. ?On the face of it Google TV looks like a threat, but in reality the cable industry will do what it has always done, and try to embrace innovation developed elsewhere and incorporate it into its own service. I think there?s a very strong likelihood that you?ll see the cable industry embed Google television and that functionality into its own set-tops, so that it?s not a threat but a cool new way to search for video?.

Explaining that the new box would bring a marriage of linear TV and the internet, O?Neill said that multiple screens had meant the social aspects of TV had disappeared, but that the social networking features included in the UPC Horizon box would go some way towards restoring this. ?We won?t necessarily watch together, but we will discuss it on the television, through Facebook?.

Showing delegates a picture of the Universal Electronics? remote, O?Neill likened the device to Apple TV with only four buttons for navigation and a QWERTY keyboard on the reverse. The sleek black Samsung form factor has rounded triangular edges and a light grey LED display at its centre. Horizon will enable the consumer to do four key things; to access the internet as well as the pay-TV offering; to enable to stream content downloaded on the PVR throughout the house; it will enable any content held on a PC or other devices to be viewed on the main TV. Navigation, which O?Neill, said UPC was becoming increasingly obsessed with, comes through the *** Snowflake UI.

O?Neill, who is also the deputy chairman of UPC Ireland, said the device would be available in Ireland during the summer of 2011. Netherlands, Germany (Unitymedia) and Austria have previously been named as the initial markets for Horizon?s deployment.

Three candidates for French DTT pay-TV

                            Published: October 15, 2010 09.55 Europe/London

Three candidates have emerged for the French DTT pay-TV capacity that was freed up by the exit of Canal J and AB1 as premium terrestrial channels. Canal+, TV Numeric and the French football league have emerged as bidders.

In the past two years, two pay-TV broadcasters have handed back their licence to the CSA: Groupe AB?s AB1 in October 2008 and Lagardere Interactive Canal J in April, 2009. Earlier this year, the French media authority CSA has launched a tender for this capacity.

The French football league Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) is one of the three interested parties. The LFP has taken op the idea to launch its own live football channel after pay TV operator Orange decided to abandon the premium TV business as a content provider. At this moment, the matches of the LFP are divided between Canal+ and Orange Sport.

Canal+ has also applied for a licence for its Canal+ Family channel. At the moment., Canal+ has its main Canal+ channel available on digital terrestrail in both SD and HD versions, as well as the Canal+ Sport channel.

TV Numeric is also a candidate; the company already offers a number of premium channels over the DTT network and now wants to expand its offer with push-VOD services. The Russian DTH platform Platforma HD is making a major push to acquire more HD subscribers.
According to Comnews, the service entered into an agreement last month with Eldorado, one of the country?s largest electronic retailers, to popularise HD. As a result of the deal, customers who buy certain full HD sets are receiving pre-paid subscriptions for three months to Platforma HD?s channels in the format.

By Platforma HD?s estimates, there are currently around 100,000 HD subscribers in Russia, of who 35,000 receive its services. It would like to increase its HD subscriber base by 30% by the end of this year and account for 40% of the HD market, which it expects will number 120,000-130,000 subscribers, in 2011.

There are around 5 million sets in Russia that support the HD format. All told, viewers can receive up to 20 HD channels.

Platforma HD is one of at least six DTH platforms operating in the country. It started off providing viewers just HD channels but subsequently added SD services to its offer
