    Hypothetical

    This of course is hypothetical.

If my Workplace has a Satelitte feed and Internet, can I use my Linux Box with a share to my home server, without been detected by my companies I.T department.
There's not router router in the office, just feeds to a massive cabinet in another office that looks like it has routers etc installed (cabinet locked).
Our company is a small arm of a larger entity 100 miles away and I.T is based there. I believe everything is routed back to H.Q.

Anyone up to speed on my Hypothetical question ?

    Cheers,

    Nwf

in principle your hypothesis should work.
can you do it without anyone noticing? Highly doubtful

also, what sat is the dish pointing at? Are you able to ftp to the hypothetical box if you hypothetically got it connected?

you dont need a sat feed just plug power in and connect ethernet to the net and away you go, hav box pre configured and you will need to open port on the router so if you havent got access ie password forget it.
i take itthat it is a server you want to set up at work hypowhatever

more than likely its a static network and possibly connected to HQ thru a VPN and firewalled etc,
so i doubt you will get "online" without having the device you want to connect setup on the lan

true, and you would have to take the card out of the subbed box and into the linux one, that will get noticed

I think by the time he's installed a new box, that no-one knows how to work, that looks different, has a different remote control, plugged it into the network, or had a network point installed near the stb, then reconfigured the firewall and router that someone might just notice things have changed slightly..

Now if, in theory, you could install a dm, pop the card in there without anyone noticing, you could then connect the UTP port through to a 3G hub and avoid using the works network alltogether... provided you knew the IP of the 3G connection wouldn't change.

If they are a commercial entity, I doubt they have a router similar to home users equipment. They would probably have a firewall. Depends on what there policy is. and what they monitor traffic wise. If you are thinking of putting your box on their network to use the faster internet connection then i'd forget it. you would need to configure their firewall to allow incoming traffic to your ip, and it would stand out by a mile. Assuming you could get on to it in the first place.

You could open the network up to a number of exploits, and probably get the bullet.
Not worth the risk in my opinion

some works network will not let unregistered mac address connect so may be if you changed the mac address on a dm500s to that of a works pc it may let you connect to the internet as long as the works pc is disconnected Hypothetically.
If you are only watching tv not sharing back they may be no need to port forward Hypothetically
