    Which Receiver to buy ?

Hi, I'm new to this and hope I'm posting in the right place. I'm just returning to multi-satelite viewing after several years of watching only the freesat channels. I had a CAM-based system and got fed-up with re-programming every day, then it got to several times a day. I have a 1.1m steerable dish and am thinking of buying the Protek 9760 HD IP, but only because it's been recommended. However, I do want a receiver that auto-updates via IP.

I'm sure readers of this thread will have their own preferences, but what I really want to know is if this is a reliable and easy to use receiver that will do the business without too much interference from me. If there are better receivers out there, I'd also welcome any advice on alternatives.

    firstly welcome to DK..
ive installed over 40 protek 9600ip/maxx1000 boxs over the last 5 years which are sd versions of the 9760hd and they are the best gift style boxs available and once patched require very little upkeep as the software auto=updates. the server is rock solid and has a excellent choice of packages on 23.5e/19.2e/16e/13e/9e/7e/ and 30w is sd and hd. personally although i dont use one anymore i cannot recommend them highly enough and the support from the dark forces is and always has been excellent.. you wont be disappointed, regards mdt

Hi MDT, Appreciate your reply and I've been reading other articles on this receiver. I've just realised what you mean when you say "gift style box". Am I correct in my understanding that whatever ppv channels I can open now may be time-limited and that at some unpredictable time in the future this will stop and the Rx will revert to nothing more than a freesat box? If so, this is not what I want to buy. I'm looking for an open-source box that will do the business for as long as their are brains out their capable of programming them. In which case, what else should I be looking at ?

you need to be looking at a linux box then.. something like the vu+solo/duo/uno or the dm800hd/hdse, be it clones or originals but these boxs will require a great deal of reading up to get operating correctly and to their potential and you will have to source your own gift connection which due to the dodgy nature we cant discuss here on dk. a linux box will revert to a freesat box also if/when it all ends just like the protek will although with a linux box your choice of server isnt limited to the one run by the dark forces. as risks go in this game the prokek is a good bet.. regards mdt

ive got iptv on my redline box, and apparently the IP AD works very well. SOmeone told me it was like 50 sheets a month plus 400 for a box a while ago...seems dirt cheap. If i was a pub landlord id get it for sure.

ill let you know if i get a test ip thing for sat.
