    S9 losing signal

I've been having real problems with my S9 recently. It started a few weeks ago when I was losing signal on Sly sports HD channels. Now it's a huge problem!!

I haven't had Sly Sports for a couple of weeks, and most other premium channels aren't working either - but some are, Dis. Cinemagic HD, NatGeo HD for instance...

Here's a good example of my problem - I've copied it from another Openbox support forum that I've posted it on...

We had a spell of about 30 minutes of really crap weather (well, crapper than normal for Yorkshire!) - it pissed it down, and was blowing a gale.

Unsurprisingly, I lost the signal but the dish was bouncing all over the place in the wind. The thing is, it didn't come back on when the weather went back to sun & no wind. I left it switched on all afternoon, but even BBC1 (strongest signal) was showing Quality 45% / Intensity 10% as before. I turned box off/on, same with LNB but still nothing. Then I unscrewed the LNB Input coax, and put it back in and BBC1 jumped to 85% / 67%!!

So - why does the signal come back nice & strong, simply by removing & replacing the LNB input?

Interestingly, as I'm typing this its just gone again!! I was watching Nat Geo HD with a signal of 85% / 47%, then it started breaking up, so checked strength and we were on 85% / 25%, but the 25% was jumping between 16% & 25% hence the breakup.

    I switched to BBC1 and had 84% / 67%, but after a couple of seconds it dropped to 45% / 10% and that's it - nothing now.

So - I just removed/replaced LNB Input again, and we're back in business. On another note, why would it be that I can get a decent(ish) signal on some channels, but absolutely nothing on others?

All seems rather wierd to me!

Here are links to a couple of videos that show my problem too

Vid 1 This shows how premium channels are rally dodgy signal intensity, but bbc2 (and others) are ok.

Vid 2 This again shows difference in FTA and premium channels. Worse bit is I can't get any of those channels now, except BBC, but that drops out after 10 - 30 minutes

Edit - forget to say that when signal drops off I can turn box off for 15 mins and when it comes back on, we're up & running again...for a while anyway

Really hope someone can advise me as I'm well ~~~~ed off with it now!

    Cheers CG

Can anyone help on this? Another strange thing happened today - I bought a new satellite finder from Maplin (it has a needle display but no tone)

I noticed that when the finder was plugged in, the needle would jump to around 5, but then slowly drop down to 0, and even when the dial was fully turned up, it stayed on 0.

Am I right in thinking that the finder only gets its power from the openbox, and everything else comes from the lnb?

Id say your box is faulty.. Sounds like the PSU in it is failing, bad cap or summat probably.. Can you get your seller to replace it?

I'd like to think so as I only bought it a year ago - I asked them about 3 weeks ago about warranty etc but he "dodged" the question, but it seems like he's stumped now too so I'll ask again.

Anyway, final test on Saturday. My brother is bringing his dreambox down, and my openbox is going to his house for the day. If I can pickup channels using his dreambox, we'll know its my openbox thats faulty.

If he can pickup all channels using my openbox with his dish, then we'll know its my dish/lnb/cable so the whole lot will have to be replaced. Going to leave both boxes connected all weekend to give it chance to get hot etc...

And if we can both pickup all channels, then I ain't got a ~~~~in clue what the problem is!!!!!

I'd seen you'd been asking a similar question and trying to find other examples - what have you found out so far mate? I'd wondered whether it could be a firmware issue, but I've loaded an old image and there's no difference...

This is a bit wierd - I wondered if I'd got the right satellite, so did a scan on 19.2e and I've now got about 200 channels, all UK Sly by the looks of it.

Some of them are working on 19.2e but not on my 28.2e channel list.

WTF? Does that mean my dish must be somewhere between 19.2e and 28.2e, therefore I'm receiving a signal from both sats?

I can scan any sat with my box and it find the ones the dish is pointing at ie my dish is @28.2 e if i scan 13e ect
it finds the chs on 28.2e still , then works for a few hours till it loses signal again

Ah mate, if only I knew which sat I was pointing at! I've a fixed dish but i've been losing signal recently so messed about with dish in case it had got blown off course...wish i'd never bothered now!

I guess I must be on 28.2e as i'm getting disney cinemagic hd, nick jr, bbc1 yorkshire etc, but only sly sports hd3, not 1 2 or 4. Strange thing is that on the 19.2 listing I get mgm hd which works but it doesn't work on 28.2...

So, openbox works fine at my brothers house, and his dreambox doesn't work at mine!

Glad my box seems ok, but now to figure out whats vw rong with my dish/cable setup.

Could my signal be affected if i'm using a sky mk3 dish, with a mk4 lnb arm & lnb? Arm is a bit shorter than the original mk3 arm.

Have you got another length of coax you could run to the lnb, just to test... Im thinking, maybe theres water ingress in the cable, or your terminations are poor.. Failing that, get a complete new sky dish kit, they're cheap enough..

If the dish is bouncing about when its windy, i would try to tighten it up or change the dish for on with a better bracket alternatively relocate it if possible you may also fit another LNB adjacent to the existing on it may hel pto captur the sign better. trees and new building also cause problems especially if it a weak signal dont blame your box for everything it gets expensive
