    Fitting a hard drive ??

    Hi

Does any body know if it is poss to fit a hard drive inside an S9 or an S10 or an S11, like to keep things tidy and not loads of leads etc at the back of the set.

    cheers

Yea, theres plenty of space inside the S9 for a hard disk.. It involves soldering into the USB connections internally, fitting a mounting bracket of somesort and having an external case switch fitted so that you can switch between the USB port and the internal hard disk, as both cant be used at the same time...

I thought about doing it myself but then figured that my 2.5" self powered external takes up little space, uses only one little lead, and its nice to be able to easilly unplug it from the S9 and plug into PC to rip the recordings from the disk to the PC..

Its not the power, its to choose which device is active because the Openbox expects to see only one external storage device on its USB port. Without the switch you'd never be able to use the USB port on the back (unless you first disconnect the hard disk from inside) cause sure enough if theres ever two external storage devices connected to the one port it'll probably have a hissy fit and tune all your channels to the god channel or gay rabbit, or summat as equally and annoyingly mischievous.

                lan

you would have to upgrade firmware via lan or rs232 if the hardrive was hardwired to usb.

True enough, but for the small additional effort of fitting a switch you retain the option of being able to use the USB port when you want to do so, without the switch the usb port becomes unavailable..

I still dont think the whole modification is worth it in my opinion, with the drive external its always readilly available to take to your PC to rip recordings from it.. I suppose a more useful enhancement to this modification would be an additional USB output fitted on the box that you use to connect to a pc so it can then see the internal hard disk..

                    heat

it would also mean more heat inside the receiver case.

will try a small 2 port hub in the rear port see what happens then.

                        usb hubs don't work.
                        that would be too easy.

i think it would struggle to read 2 usb's at once, which is the same as a hd & usb (which needs the switch so it knows which way to turn)
Personally i did just plug a hd into the external usb as nibblitz said it's easier to get to comp ect. as i use to record stuff for my son and upload it to fileshare on comp. then he could watch it on the night; all be it a tad later then on the tele .
I can also use my phillips dvd player/recorder which has hd installed, i connect via scart from the openbox to the recorder, i can watch it back through that or make a dvd to watch anywhere..
