transfer rate between receiver and usb hardrive is too slow.
Format has nothing to do with it.
Use a benchmark program to test the transfer rate,I bet it is 30MBs or slower.

        usb3.0

you may have to go with a usb3.0 case instead of usb2.0

          sata

I just tried a 160g sata drive in a usb2.0 case and it failed to record hd.So that rules out buying a bigger sata hardrive and using the same case.

Im pretty sure I read somewhere that some firmware releases had issues with HD recording, so maybe try a different firmware.. Or, try a shorter usb cable. If its a long thin crappy usb cable that you're currently using that could be slowing your transfer speed a bit.. Would be wise to do as previously mentioned though, benchmark the drive speed on your PC..

I use a USB2 western digital 500gb 2.5" usb powered portable drive, records & playback of HD is perfectly fine on my S9..

              stub

I tried a little stub of a usb cable, the shortest I had and it made no difference.

A lot depends on the symbol rate on the transponder you are trying to record.I've seen hd on sr <20000 and others on >30000

In your experience, but thats not a general fact.. I can, as can so many others, record HD from any and all channels, movies, sports, pron, foriegn HD channels, the lot.. You cant just make a sweeping statement indicating that there is generally something wrong with Openbox HD recording from certain transponders, when there clearly isnt..

Either users have a buggy firmware, or crap usb drives, or a faulty openbox.. HD recording on an Openbox does work fine, if all elements for the process are tickity boo..

My first HD recording adventure was on a transponder way lower than sr 20000 and I recorded 1hour 23minutes before the receiver froze. That was with the aug 24th firmware.I tried many usb2.0 cases and many hardrives,I could never get a transfer rate greater than 30MBs.I hate to start buying external drives that cost more than the receiver and find out they don't work.If people that say they work would post the transfer rates I would have a goal to aim for.

                      35 tops

Other people complaining about transfer rate with big drives in general say the transfer rate they are getting is 30 to 35MBs,so I am not too far off. Some drives/usb2.0 cases may be at the high end and some drives may have bigger buffers.

                        oldies

With the aug 8th firmware I was able to play back a short hd recording made with other firmware, but with the lip sync problem.TP sr was <20000
Recording an hd tp with sr 20000,playback is jerky.Recording an hd tp sr 30000,forget it.Playback isn't even viewable. So the sr definitely has an effect on recording/playback.The same with the aug 15th firmware.
Transfer rate on the usb is around 32MBs.

hiya thanks to everyone whos replied ive formatted the drive with swissknife via the laptop and via the box but with no different effects i cant comment on any other firmware as this is my first box which has the 14.11.11 firmware on i haven tried a different usb cable but i will try that next or hopefully a fw update will sort it ive even tried a friends western digital 250g usb only hard drive and that was the same as it seems its a common problemi cant see how the box is faulty it seems hit and miss with these boxes as to whether the record option works
                          thanks again debs

ps is there a tutorial on how to use a benchmark tool?
                          thanks again

With the one attached to the other thread, you just run it,there is no install.
You have to select the drive letter that the usb drive is,in my case it's drive f:For safety it just reads the drive,no writing or verify. My best guess is you need a rate of at least 35MBs
