Recording on S10

I recently tried recording a movie on my S10. I only have a 4gb usb flash drive i know it would'int even fit a movie on

But i just wanted to see if it worked ok as it got half way though it started popping up with a grey box saying something i couldint work out because it flashed on/off so quick the message on the screen.
It said something like "the device your usiing is going to slow to record or something" And only recorded 21 Minutes of HD movie.

I believe it is probably the memory on usb stick was too less etc??

My question is can i get some sort of hard drive to slot under the smart card reader etc?? If so what drives will fit??
If not can i get a 32gb usb thumb stick and record without that grey box popping up and stopping my recording.

Yea, you need a fast memory stick, or fast sdhc card in a usb adaptor, especially if you want to record HD stuff.. A usb powered 2.5" portable hard disk would be the ideal solution if you want trouble free recording..

welcome to the wonderful world of device too slow messages.
Forget using usb sticks for hd,#1 they are too puny and #2 they are too slow.
Get yourself a fast sata external usb drive.

Thanks for quick responses. Whats the catchment speed i need to roughly go over in hard drive speed?
Also can you recommend me a low price one and a high price one prefably from amazon.co.uk as i don't know exactly what im looking for

Just had a quick look i need a external 2.5" hard drive caddy sata/usb one.
And then i get a quite quick 2.5" sata hard drive.

Also what about 12v powered usb hard drives?

Any drive should be faster than the USB port itself, so it dont really matter about the drive..

12v powered drive? Well thats going to be a 3.5" desktop drive, bigger, hotter, possibly noisier, do you really want to squeeze one of them into your box?

Why not just get a External USB powered 2.5" portable drive... They're small enough to leave sitting ontop the box, and you can easilly remove it to plug into your PC for when you might like to rip the recordings from it..

good luck,I'm still trying to find a drive that will record hd.
My first buy was a wd 500gig external usb2.0 external powered,that was a failure.I then got a seagate 1.5Tb external usb2.0 external powered and only the june 2011 would recognize it when plugged in.I did a grip and rip and put the hardrive in my own sata case external powered,all firmwares recognize it but still can't record hd.And that is with an sr of 20000 which isn't even the ultimate torture test for drives.
My advice is to save all receipts and original packaging on whatever drive you buy.

Yea, I remeber you saying in a different thread.. Are you using sata drives now, are they ok? It dont make sense really, because a USB2 port has a theoretical max bandwidth of 60MB/s, but in the real working situations USB2 transfer rates will usually max out at around 30MB/s, it always will, regardless of what drive is on it. An average old pata drive should be able to easilly sustain 40 to 50MB/s inside a PC, so on a USB controller it would be bottlenecked by the USB-Pata controller and/or the USB2 speed limitations itself..

Unless the USB-PATA controller in your paticular caddy is a bit rubbish.. Or theres something wrong with your Openbox, cause in thoery theres no reason why a PATA on USB2 shouldnt work just fine for recording HD.. They always used to put PATA drives in Sky+ HD satellite boxes..

funny parts

The funny part is, the brand new drives had the same transfer rate as my old pata drive,33MBs.
I can record sd fine with the seagate,but it fails on HD.
The old pata drives in external case would show device to slow to record,no error like that on the seagate.But playback will play for about 1 minute then freeze,I have to cycle power to recover.Another knee slapper is the fact that I can record hd with one version of firmware,then it plays back fine if I load an older version of firmware.Not very convenient.A guy on another site says he records hd with a pata drive fine,and even mentioned an external case he uses.Same transfer rate as mine.Right now I will settle for recording hd and playing it back on the pc.

They always used to put PATA drives in Sky+ HD satellite boxes..

The pata drive I was using actually came out of a never used tivo device,so I knew the drive was good for recording(sd at least)I have different pata external cases I tried,so I can't blame the case.(usb2.0)
I did have the option to buy usb3.0,but it was only 500gig and actually more expensive the the seagate 1.5Tb.I even bought a new usb2.0 cable.

A friend gave me an older seagate 1.5Tb to try to recover files,it had bit the dust with s.m.a.r.t. errors when taken out of the case and plugged into a pc.I stuck my drive in that and the s10 recognizes it with the 10-10 firmware and I was able to playback hd recordings I made with just slight burps.The circuit board in the case is different than mine,different chipsets.I may end up swapping cases with him.I will do further tests with my drive in his case.The case p/n that works is:
9ZC2A8-500
mine is 9ZC2A8-501 and was only recognized by the june 2011 firmware-all others showed no usb connected.

I just like to add that the psu in the S10/11 isn't that stunning... I would imagine an external usb HD with it's own power supply would be safer and more reliable... I think there an issue with a similar problem using non powered Ext HD on the likes of WD TV live, I also had a bus powered EXT HD on my sumvision micro2 and that expired after a while...
