Openbox s10 hd problem when hot

Hi Last night my open-box s10 hd started to lose transponder signal i could not watch anything until i reboot. This only lasted a few min and i would lose it again. I have another sat box that moves my dish so i checked that for signal as i thought it was sun flare outage but no it was holding a very strong signal. Today the box is working ok but if it gets to hot again I am sure it will lose the signal. Can anyone tell me if this happens to open-box s10 hd ? is this the tuner going faulty it's under warranty as its not a year old but I just want to make sure its nothing else. its not a clone.

Is your box underneath or on top of anoth box?

Make sure all the vent slots are clear of other devices.

Openbox doesn't create any amount of heat so should not get hot.

My box is on top of my blue ray DVD player but that's not switched on, the box does get warm and I am in a hot country. The air slots are free and this is the first time that this has happened so I am thinking that the tuner is going faulty.

I put a fan inside mine over the processor heatsink (old 12v cpu fan)
Different firmware revs will run hot/cooler
some are burn your finger hot on the heatsink.
Definitely not good long term without a fan

rule of thumb

if your finger gets burned when on the processor heatsink it's time to install a 12v fan.
Use the 12v that runs to the back of the receiver.

Thank you for the help I don't think that any openbox 10 hd should be as hot as this so its a fault. It has been working fine for 8 months, now it last about 45 min before it losses the signal. I am using a free standing fan now to cool it down and it works. I have contacted my suppler as its not 1 year old and will try an get it repaired or replaced, if that fails then the 12v fan will be my only hope.

like I said newer firmware runs hotter.The original firmware didn't need a fan.

Very interesting thread.

My OB is kept in cabinet behind a glass door and does not even get warm. Running latest firmware.

My Dbox 800 HD used to be in the same cabinet & you could cook on it before it rolled over and died.

I have seen this with other brands in the past with other processors.Some had no heatsink at all but with original factory firmware the processor ran just warm.As time went on and more demanding firmware was loaded the processor ran hot.

I have never upgraded the firmware its the same 1 as when it was new. The box has run with no problems for 8 month and it was only warm to touch then. It is now a lot warmer and stop's working after 45 min. I will try and get my box repaired or replaced under the 1 year guarantee.

Well I found a fix to my problem without sending it back for repair which I don't think they will do very well in Bangkok. I have used a laptop cooler it powers up with the usb port and if i want to use the pvr I can get a usb adapter to plug in both its working well with the cooling fan. Thanks everyone for there ideas on this problem.

Well the laptop fan did not work it looks like the problem has been the tuner going faulty all along as it loses signal again when its cold and the only way to get it back for about 15 min is rebooting. I will be sending it back for repair or a new box.

Can you hook up any 12V fan? Because on the back it says 12V 50mA

the back says 50ma,but I have used fans that draw 150ma no problem except for the fan noise.The 12v to the back uses a separate power connector on the power supply that I disconnect.Some old battery packs for old phones use the same connector so I mate the cpu fan to that.
*actually I just looked at the fan I am using now and it is 160ma,for about 1 month now no problems.

This my be a little bit raw but have had great success with xbox360 overheating problems and by god they do get hot, use a couple of pieces of 10mm copper tube,cut to a suitable length,brace together with wire, then simlpy fix to heatsink.
