12v Trough the usb port now my box is dead

I acidently plugegged my vonets iffi dongle into the usb on the back of my openbox, whilist the dongle was still being powered by a 12v external source. Basicly the box instally shut of with that famililiar smell of an electroic componant givien up the ghost.

Just wondered if anyone might have any ideas what i might have fried?

I have tested the psu and that is supplying 5/12/24v to the main board and the only other component. I have tested with a multi meter is the lm317t voltage reg, but if this was blown would it stop the box from booting?

When i say the box is dead i get nothing on the display when i turning the box on, no red light nothing!!

    Any idea folks?

    Cheers

    Hi

Sounds like something has popped, can you see a blown cap or anything on mainboard. I take connect usb drives while box is still on with no problems although that is not doing what you did as it had an external power source.

Have you looked on telly if box is actually booting and maybe your front display is kaput.

Is the psu readings on mainboard side.
Connect a usb drive and see if it powers that.
Disconnect the lcd connector then try and see if it boots up.

Just try that and come with your findings.
Oh and which openbox is it.

    Regards

Hi Mast, thanks for the quick reply.

The box is in bits atm but all the voltages were taken from the main-board side of ribbon connector.

I looked over the board and can't see any bulging or leaking caps. It's hard to tell if any of the SMD ones have blown with out testing them all with the mm.

I'll try the rest of your suggestions when i get back as i am just going to shoot out to Maplins to grab a spare 317t and some new caps and a null cable as well, just in case.

I hope i can bring this box back from the dead, although this dose give me the opertunity to upgrade to the DM800 i have wanted. Not sure the misses will agree though

      cheers

          Hi

Well the usb powering up is a good sign.

I would suggest trying out the method in the link.

I would think you stand a good chance, try and use the firmware that was currently on it.
          Regards

            Hello,

I have tried the Recovery but just keep getting the message "Set stb memory error" Is it a case of just keep trying or trying a different firmware?

I'm using a dedicated serial (com 1 ) port on an old xp machine.

Any more ideas or is it time for the bin?

            Cheers
            Tommy

                  Hi

If its null modem and dedicated serial port then its to do with timings so you are gonna have to keep trying.

I myself havent been able to report success with this method but others have had success.

I only managed to connect via this method with a perfect working box.

Also the loader has to be the right one and helps if you trying with the last known firmware according to some people.

                  Regards
