    Recording USB HD

Hi Can anyone tell me what format the box uses to record (HD mainly) and roughly how much space for a 30min - 1hour HD program at 720P would need,

I ordered a box today but dont have enough spare cash for a HDD yet so i plan on using a 8GB USB 3 flash drive temporarily, i know i wont get loads on but i don't record too much and i usualy delete stuff as soon as watched anyway so a couple of hours max needed i can usually get a 1.5 hour 1080p mkv on it so id of thought at least double the time for 720p

    Thanks for anything

SD Disney Show (high bitrate) would give you
    2160 MB per 1hour
so for a 8GB your looking at 3.79 hours

however if its TV talk show (low bitrate)
your looking at 1320 MB per 1hour
so for a 8GB your looking at 6.20 hours

it really depends its hit and miss

also for HD it seems to be double those figures

    hope that helped

It records to either an Mpeg2 PS or TS file... You cant choose what resolution to record at, you'll record whatever is being broadcast.. So even if your box output is set to display at 720p, you'll still be recording HD channels in 1080i... SD channels could be anywhere around 1GB per hour, HD channels could be anything from 2GB upwards per hour.. It all depends on what the channel is being broadcast at...

Thanks both for the reply's so a few hours either way, that's fine im hoping to get a hard drive soon when ive got some spare cash, its a shame it wont work with IDE drives ive got like 4 250gig ones just sitting there doing nothing , would a IDE drive be fast enough ? i mean its faster than USB flash drives at writing and even reading most of the time one of these would be a lot cheaper than buying a new HDD

        thanks again Ash

record size depends on the symbol rate of the transmission.
I've had hd wildfeeds that recorded at 4gig for 15 minutes worth.Hd records ts only, you have no choice and you get a popup stating so.

right ok best had stick to recording the SD channels while having to use the flash drive then , as previous question do you know if IDE will be ok to use because i can order a caddy next week if it is

            Thanks Ash

caddys should work, you might have to format them once you get it

however iv never tried so dont take my word for it as 100%

i still think its worth getting

i have a 2.5 inch sata caddy but the hdd is being used so i cant try it out sorry

Hi thanks for reply i know caddys do work as ive seen plenty posts about people using sata caddys same as yours. Its more the IDE part im worried about i think it should be fast enough but im not 100%, i know sky changed from IDE to sata originally because they thought IDE was too slow for HD recording then obviously due the the HDD needing to be bigger it had to be sat in end, but one of the 250gb IDE drives ive got would be ok if its fast enough

                Thanks Ash

go usb 3.0 external powered if you get a case.
Most should take either sata or old pata drives, mine came with adapters. No problem recording with usb 3.0 with either sata or pata.I have a 250GB pata drive in it now.

Its only a USB2 port on these satellite boxes, so there really shouldnt be any advantage with using a USB3 drive instead of a USB2 drive...

i was just wondering my self what the advantage of usb 3 would be especially on a pata HDD

like many things in electronics,it makes no sense yet works.
The transfer rate on the hardrives is no different, using the benchmark program. There were other threads on the subject.I got the usb 3.0 case at a second hand store so I got it cheap.

the write test was a destructive test,so I never did that. The read tests were identical.
