Newbie: i've got loads of channels but nothing FTA

    Hi guys,

I've just entered the world of sat tv with my openbox s10.

Since i'm 30kms out of the city, i'm doing it the hard way. I bought a dish and set it up myself. Have finally managed to get the satellite i want but i'm only receiving scrambled channels and the FTA channels/transponders are all too weak?!?!

    The facts:
    *s10 openbox
*60cm antenna with dual LNB - no motors
*Satellite i want is Star One C2 (i'm in Brazil)
*I just want the FTA channels for now
    *LNB frequency set to universal
*The satellite signal strenght is at 90%
*Transponders on the scrambled channels have 70% quality
*Transponders relating to the FTA channels jump around alot but sit about 40-50% quality
*there is one working FTA channel - a bloody advert channel!
*When trying to adjust the dish i can't get any better than the 40-50%
*Already adjusted LNB skew with nothing better than 40-50%
*The bracket holding the dish is NOT PLUMB! i checked

I wondered if my dish is too small but i checked and its a common fta size locally.

I dont understand why some transponders have different signal strengths to others?? Especially if the satellite signal strength is really good.

Anyone got any ideas/suggestions that could help me out?!

    Cheers,
    mike

Are you sure you're using the right LNB frequency setting ?

From what I can see, most of the TP's broadcasting FTA on that satellite are between 3628 to 4190

Cheers nibblitz... your onto something there.

As i noted my LNB freq was on one of the universal settings. I started flicking through these frequencies (while on a FTA transponder) and suddenly on 11200 the signals shot up. 90% with %70 quality.

I then did a 'fta yes' of the satellite again but all these transponders fail?!?!

Likewise, I did search on an individual transponder - fta:yes - network search:yes but nothing... They all fail except for one.

      Any ideas?

      Cheers,
      Mike

Change your LNB frequency setting to suit frequencies of between 3620 to 4190

        Try 5150

Thanks nibblitz. I tried 5150... infact i tried all the different frequencies for the LNB for that particular satellite.

When blind searching with FTA:no for TP's they all comeback OK - doesnt matter which lnb freq.! When i set it to search FTA:yes they all fail (except that one damn channel).

I have to confirm but it seems that changing the LNB frequency gives the FTA TP's quality signal (70%)... but still fails?!?!?

Is a signal of 90% and 70% quality 'excellent' 'average' or 'poor'??

          Thanks,

          Mike

Unfortunately your right.... what a &%$&!!

Using lyngsat, theres nothing clear about this - only if you know what your looking for.

Oh well... time to discover some of the other openbox functions.

              Cheers,

              Mike

Are there any other Satellites you could aim your dish at?

a 60cm dish is kinda puny for ku band.
I have an 80cm and suffer from low quality sometimes.
Maybe try for amazonas or other sats beamed your way.
Lyngsat depends on volunteers for their info and aren't always accurate or uptodate.
