Sky dish/ box

Hi ppl I am moving house and there is a sky dish on the wall and the cable feed in the house I have been looking at a few boxes and I don't know what one to go for I want to pay about ?85 to 150 max can I buy a box and plug it in and it will pick up channles or do I need to buy a sub off sky ??

You can use the Sky dish, without a Sub (of some sort) you will only receive FTA (Free to Air) channels no matter what box you buy..

If you know what features & capabilities you want the box to have then you'll be able to narrow down your choice of receiver... They start from around 50 quid for a basic box, upto several hundreds for a box with all the pies...

Is there anything out there I could use to get more channels ? And what box as the best support and software updates ?

Many satellite receivers are capable of "more channels", even the cheapo 50 quid ones, how you make the boxes achieve it cannot be discussed on this forum as such discussion is not allowed.. You'll have to google how to get "more channels" from whatever box you decide to buy.. Most boxes are well supported with regular updates.

As a guide, if you're wanting a box that has similar usability as a Sky+HD box then you'll be spending at around 200 quid upwards for just the box... If you just want to watch TV then a 50 quid box will do it... You've got to decide what you want from the box..

You're currently posting in the Openbox section, this section covers the Openbox & Skybox range of receivers, they cost around 50 quid, they are budget receivers, they are excellent for watching HD telly, but you dont get a Full EPG like on a SkyTV box, and they are single tuner, so you cant watch one channel whilst recording another. The more you pay for a box the more capable it will be..

Boxes like a Technomate 5402 or a Blade 7000 would allow for full EPG and are quite easy to setup and use... Or theres the even more capable "Linux" receivers like Dreambox, but they're not as user friendly as they require a bit more faffing about to get working and keep working...
