Advise on which SAT boxes to buy

    Hi Guys,

Im new to this site and just wanted some advise and recommendation on what Sat reciever to get. Back in the days I had a DBOX on cable but after that I just got myself subscribed to SkyHD. But I am now looking for a Sat Recevier that will give me all Sly channels.

Been reading around and can see that OpenBox and SkyBox are the best out there. Is that true and which do you recommend? Read that some dont have EPG. Is there any out there that support this?

Any advise would be much appreciated. If anyone has any reading material or setup instruction for newbie that would be great. Can I get all the info I need to setup from this website or I have to look elsewhere? e.g Firmware, Images.. etc.

    Thanks

Openbox/Skybox are not the best out there, they are the cheapest.. The best Satellite Box out there would probably be the most expensive one you can find...

If you want Full EPG you'll need a Linux box of somesort, or a receiver like a Blade 7000 or Technomate 5402

You wont get no help here with getting all Sky channels, as this forum doesnt allow such discussions...

Hey Thanks and I appreciate the quick response and advise.

I dont mind spending a bit of money just need a decent box and I can find myself relying on EPG and getting frustrated if it not there.

I will look into Blade 7000 and Technomate 5402

      Thanks again

The OP wants full EPG, there's no point recommending any Skybox or Openbox...

Thanks guys for all your advise,

I have been doing some thinking and may actually go for the Skybox F5.. I will use this in a spare room where I can watch movies and sports so I may be able to live without EPG.

Any advise where the best place to get these from? Is support included and easily available?

Also would this box be something that I can re-image myself when updates come out. As I dont want to keep paying someone to do this for me rather learn it myself as I used to do when I used to have a DBOX2 a few years back.

              Thanks again

If the image is stable there is usually very little point in re-imaging.

Even if you have to its plug and play pretty much have 2 usb sticks take a full dump of current set-up in case it goes pete tong, have the new image on another stick and then update firmware and re copy cconfig over.

Honestly it a doddle and my scenario is I have 2 boxes plugged in sky box for normal day to day so I use the epg on there and then just press watch other box on all in one remote and it switches over, bobs your uncle fanny's your aunt. Skybox with epg only thing wife misses is recording on proper skybox.

                  Thanks Gyro85,

Any recommendations where I can buy this? trusted and wont get ripped off?

I like your setup. that way you can still enjoy EPG and then just switch a channel.

                  Thanks

But if you aint got a SkyTV digi box you could always stick an EPG app on your phone (if you got android)

I browse the EPG on my Tivo, find what I want to watch then switch to my Skybox and watch it...

I'd say the best place to buy a box would be on Ebay from a UK seller with good feedback, you got protection if it goes tits up..

If you want a tv guide download a app to your fone or ipad or tablet the tv guide I use it all the time gives me exactly what I want and I set timers on my fone to remind me when my program is about to start.

the reason why your dm500 and dm800 packed up within a year is because they were cheap and nasty clones just like the skybox/openbox . if you want a good sat box i would go for a original dm or a vu+ ... no contest
