Leaving skybox on or power off to save bandwidth?

Just wondering if people power off their sat box when not using for long periods to save bandwidth?

If the both is left on 24/7 must use a bit of data?

In standby its not going to use any bandwidth, its shut down...

Its best practice not to leave your box on when not watching, its going to use hardly any of your bandwidth but its making your server have to serve unnecessarily, and if every other user did the same then it all becomes a much more glitchtastic experience for those trying to watch...

not all boxes are off in standby, some only switch the tuner off and the rest is still on and using bandwidth so are not shutdown (maybe not the skybox however)

but they use little or no bandwidth anyway, the important thing is they are wasting power, so its about saving power, not bandwidth, and should be powered off when not in use overnight

No its not. When you put the box on Standby its Linux kernel shuts down... It cant be connected to anything as the OS is not loaded up and running... Why do you think it has to go through a boot up sequence when you turn it back on from Standby...

Oh my... Of course your server shows no channel chosen, because your box is not communicating, its shutdown... When your box is on standby (shutdown) your router and server is only seeing the NIC, not the box, the box cannot communicate, its OS is shutdown, there is no communication, its not talking, no data will transfer because it cant, so no bandwith will be used when your box is in standby....

                  I would tend to agree.

Simple test for any doubters is to log into your router and check connected devices.

If You are worried why not just put your box on a fta channel and no request will be sent to your server. Then put it on standby or if it really bothers you remove the ethernet cable
