Newbie needing advice

Hi guys
Would like some advice if anyone can help
I have Vm and would like to purchase a f3 or f5 box do I need a dish or can I run it from my modem. A family member has a f3 but he is not very tech minded so couldn't answer my question I was thinking of changing to sky what is your thoughts.
