hdd too slow problem

hi guys i have a 1t buffalo usb powered hdd on my openbox s11,most of the time it freezes up the box and comes up with device speed too slow to record when i put the timeshift on.
it seems to work a slightly better when timeshift is off but mostly requires a lot of switching the box on and off.
very frustrating.
any help would be appreciated, dont know if maybe the firmware requires upgarding.
is the firmware found in the menu,information,version, if so it reads c2hs2-11-10-10:0579cmt.

Have you a different external hard disk you could try, that way you can be sure if the problem is with your Openbox or the Bufallo drive..
