I've had a similar problem with my virgin router and this is what I was told to do:
try to change your security settings to WPA only
see if your firewall is not blocking the access to the dongle
try to change your broadcasting channels to the number 1
does your skybox have the latest firmware? I believe the latest one is required which fixes wifi connection faults.
As your dongle can be detected by the router, there is no hardware fault.

    Hope this helps.

You have to have some security enabled, but only 1 WPA or WPA2

ive been told I can put same wire in as normal sky dish. Is that true and would I put it into loop or other part on the back? Also why does it keep saying timed out when I try to connect my wifi usb? will I need that connected to router for it to work?

Yes get home plugs. Great job and does away with the cables. Not sure about loop but if you did that surely you would need to watch what the other box is watching.

what are home plugs? So if I took out the wire from normal box coming from sky dish and put it into back of skybox it wouldnt work?

If you don't use the original box then you can use the same cable from dish in the skybox f5

Google Ethernet homeplugs and they are self explanatory. Don't put cable in loop, put it in lnb in outlet on back of box.
