    New usb to rs232 lead won't connect to skybox f5

    hello i would like to know how do you know if the skybox f5 has connected to my laptop i did a blind scan and my skybox needs resetting with the rs232 but for some reason it doesn't connect and i am struggling what to do next i have tried the reset procedure loading the box with the firmware but nothing happens like the box and/or laptop just are communicating any help would be good thanks in advance.

      A lot of members seem to have trouble with USB to RS232 adapters. They are very "hit & miss".

      If you can beg, steal or borrow a pc with a 9 pin D type RS232 COM port, then that will be your best option.

      Other than that, make sure that you have installed any drivers that came with your adapter, & make sure that you have selected the right COM port.

          the usb doesn't power the 232 side of things for communication...........best avoided.......no idea why manufacturers insist in using the 232 ports since almost everything PC no longer has them.

            for disaster recovery obviously
            when the receiver is dead so is the usb port
            the rs232 port keeps on ticking

              old pc's are often cheaper than the usb converter.
              I picked up a pc somebody was throwing out a couple of weeks ago for free.
              I always have 2 or 3 old pc's kicking around just in case my main one craps out.
