Need to update firmware..can i use usb or do i need null modem

I have to upgrade a mates box and when i did my own i managed to brick it and only the help of the good folk here and hours of frustration i managed to get it back on. I tried to upload new channel list without upgrading firmware.
Do i need to use the null modem again or can it be done by usb. I tried to put the upgrade on by usb and it says file mismatch.

If the box can boot up then use the usb method but make sure you have the right image file and not some other kind of file.
