unbricking box with null modem..having an issue....

After my success on getting my own box back to life i tried to upgrade my mates and bricked that!...I have tried to run erom upgrade and i have the correct port but keep getting synchronizing stb please re set target and when i do i get a message set stb memory error.
Also after i download the latest abs file do i just put that in the browse box or do i have to open the file and save as then use that in the browse on erom upgrade.
Its driving me f@@@@ mental!!...Please anyone....

firmware should be a .abs file so I don't know what you are asking.
the loader has to match the receiver model,s10 loader for s10, F3 loader for F3 and so forth.

Yeah its a abs file and the correct one so that seems allright. Its just not playing ball!
