I'm thinking of buying the open-box x5 and i need to know whether it is easy to update and if there are regular updates fore the x5?

Save yourself a load of trouble and go for a F3.

If it is channel list you are talking about the answer is no because it uses a .bin format and regularly updated channel list by AJ and sattv5 are .dbs.
These days I recommend people to look at boxes like cloud ipbox or openbox 6000 hd which are vu+solo clones might be harder to set up initially but well worth the effort, you get 7 day epg, web interface and lots of different skin to suit all.
