It's an external drive you have, not USB stick connected?
Is it powered via usb or external power supply adapter?

I can't actually confirm but I have read that you need to use an external drive (not USB stick) externally powered.

If you have this and it makes no difference then I also read best to format to FAT32 (with 64k cluster size).

I've tried an external 2.5'' hdd in a usb caddy and a 16gb usb stick and they both stutter. I have a external desktop hdd with external power that I can try.

I read in another forum that it's possibly related to power supply problems with the skybox having problems supplying itself and the usb stick (or external hdd still powered by skybox).

By using an externally powered it helped. I can't remember if they had to format to FAT32 as well.
