Skybox f5s is it safe?

Hi,
Is it safe to use my Skybox f5s?...is there a vpn etc ...not sure my ip address is secure on servers.is there anything I can do to beef up security? ...also I plugged in a usbstick into the back an my box decided to die on me...but left it off for a couple of mins plugged back in an worked again..strange?...
Any advice would be helpful...
