I don't have a null modem cable but would a svga cable do the same trick as my laptop is a 15 pin an on the back of openbox its a 9 pin

No mate it won't (thats why people say you need a Null cable) not a SVGA cable
check ebay there are loads for a few quid

you need to find a computer or laptop with a com port
Makes you glad why i didn't throw my old windows ME computer away
...sit in the cupboard & collect dust...maybe one day i might need you....
