Why is wifi needed for these boxes?

The Wi-Fi can be used on these receivers for various things such as Youtube etc... as for watching TV then for Free to Air channels you wont need it.

other than that, not really needed.

Not specifically wifi but definately an internet connection be it wifi or wired.
