possible skybox f5 clone

Hi all,

been looking at a few tutorials about saving bricked skybox f5 and I bought one off flea bay without knowing its coming up load, when I power up it doesn't even show a picture. My laptop doesn't have a null modem port so im going to get a rs232 to usb how successful is reflashing one of these boxes with these cables and why does it have to be the null modem cable to flash these instead of the usb port that is on the box.

There's mixed reports about how successful the USB to null modem flashing is but I can honestly say I have only flashed bricked f5 f3 f5s f5 and other open box s range and I've had 100% succes rate. I use a new Samsung laptop which is about a year old and I've never had problems, the only issue I had was choosing either the wrong port or wrong firmware the first few times I did it. (User Error) I have people all over who send me there boxes and have never not been able to reflash them. Possible just luck but who nos

Ive got an hp pavilion that has seen better days but ill give it a bash am a total sat virgin though , I am unsure if its a clone if flash it with a clone image and the box is genuine will the box still work.
