Openbox S9 - freezing and can't change channel

Someone has given me an Openbox S9 - and asked me to figure out what's wrong with it. It freezes and when it does that, it's not possible to change channel.

I have not started to troubleshoot it yet but given that there are many openbox users here, I wondered if these symptoms resonate with anyone here?

The first symptom could be a whole load of things - from the box end to ...erm...afar. However, I'm guessing the secondary symptom - i.e. not being able to change channel while this happens means this is an issue with the box itself?

Would be grateful for any opinions.

    probably a heat problem.
pop the cover off and put a fan on the processor, like an old pc cpu type fan.

had the same problem ( don't laugh) all I did was change the batteries in the remote,
and it worked straight away no probs since
cant see why itwould affect the box but it did
      worth ago at least

Batteries in the remote control will not have any affect on a box freezing.

The most common cause of freezing has already been mentioned by slugworth.

If the op is not confident enough to fit a laptop fan then there are cheap (under ?2.00 delivered) USB cooling fans on the bay.

I just had to do the fan thing on my s10 a few months ago.
It had been working fine for about 1 year.
It would freeze after about 1 minute of being turned on.

Failing capacitors on the PSU board could also cause different intermittent problems until they fail completely.

Have a look at C19 on the PSU board (it may be 1000uF or 1500uF @ 10v or 16v). The top should be completely flat with no bulging.
