    Skybox F5 Router issues?

Hi there, I'm currently getting issue when regarding router.

I have installed a skybox at my mams house and this works find when hooked up directly to the router provided by VM the only issue is this router is about 10 = 15 years old. This means that this router isn't wireless. so she has a Netgear router attached to create a Wi-Fi connection for the laptop.

The issue is when I connect directly to the netgear I lose all online access to network apps youtube etc from the STB. so I assume that there Is something in the network local settings that I'm missing. Can anybody help me or tell me how to find out the correct settings that I should be using in this screen. Should I Manually edit DHCP settings?

Is it a case that I have to enter the netgear router and do some port forwarding or should it be automatic.

    Thanks in advance

I cant see the router being at fault here but if tyou connect another device say your smartphone via wireless and you can surf the net etc.. then you can rule out the router, No need for any port forwarding at all.

For the extra Cost a set of Homeplugs which are far superior to wireless can be had from as little as about ?12

      thanks agai digicon
that's what I was using homeplugs they work perfect when connected direct to VM router but when I connect them to the netgear router I don't get online with the STB. I think I need to change the local network settings on the stb but I'm not sure where to find the what I need to enter regarding the
      IP address
      subnet mask
      gateway
      DNS preferred
      DNS alternate

I'm going round again tomorrow will try and connect my phone to wifi etc

Ideally the stb should use DHCP so it will retrieve all information it needs from the router.

To rule out either the stb or the router have you tried the stb in yours via the homeplugs? If stb is fine in yours via the same homeplugs as in your mums then it has to be the router.

        What is make/model of router?

          bbc_uk thanks

I will update you with the router/etc tomorrow after I have been back round. The STB works fine via the original router using the homeplugs It only has issue when I try and run them threw the netgear router. I have also ran the stb at mine and woks fine.

You say original router, do you not mean original modem. In the old days TW/NTL supplied just a modem with only one outgoing ethernet port.

If it is an actual router (even if it's not wireless it may have several outgoing ethernet ports then your problem maybe connecting a router to another router.

If it's an actual modem then it should be okay but you do know that you need to restart the modem once you have connected it to the router.

Yeah its the original modem supplied many years ago with only one Ethernet port. if I connect directly to that using the homeplugs then the stb works fine there isn't any issues. the issue arises when I try and connect via the router(netgear), for some reason the stb doesn't then work. Will try a reset both modem and router.

Just re-read your first post. If your router itself works (ie you can connect your laptop wirelessly to it) then no need to restart modem and/or router.

If wireless works fine then can you connect a device (other than stb) to the ethernet (not homeplugs) like maybe laptop (ensure you have disabled wireless first on laptop and can't get internet otherwise laptop may just use wireless).

If you can't get any activity out of the ethernet port (and the wireless activity is still ok) then try a different port, etc. If you still can't get any activity out of any ports with any device (not just stb or homeplugs) then let me know.

If you can get activity out of ethernet port with another device then that rules out ethernet port being an issue. In this case I'd be inclined to then connect wireless router ethernet port to homeplug again and on the other end of homeplug (where stb normally plugs in) I'd then connect this same device (ie laptop; again with wireless disabled, or whatever else you used) to that ethernet port.

Now if ethernet works fine via router (not modem) and the homeplugs on another device then it's likely router itself doesn't like stb.

I know this all seems a bit long-winded but it's a case of trying to narrow down what the problem is, or any hardware clash.

I once had a htc phone that didn't like connecting to my mums router wirelessly and when I looked into it the router somehow was incorrectly reading the mac address of the phone and it was garbled. The phone itself connected to other wireless routers ok as did mums router was ok with other phones.

BBC_uk will try that see if it works etc, was going to try fresh Ethernet lead between router and modem as well. I will update when I have been back round

Sorry I thought that I had replied on how I got round this issue and what the fix was.

I went back round and reset all connections still no luck. The way I fixed the issue was that I had the STB and homeplug plugged in to an extension along with the TV etc.

I don't why I tried the following but it worked. I unplugged the Homeplug and went directly into the main socket on the wall and started the STB etc and they worked fine. So for some reason the homeplugs don't like being run via extensions with other sources running threw them

I have read on Solwise website that this can be an issue with extension leads and a way around that is to get a pass-through.

                      At least you're sorted.

This is a common issue with Homeplugs. Most instructions will tell you to connect directly to a wall socket and not via any extension leads, because if you do as you realised, it either kills the connection or significantly reduces the output of them. Homplugs do not also work if your house is running on a different circuit from the rest of the house. However that aside, they are a fantastic bit of kit when you get them working
