My mates f5s has got stuck on the load up and will not come on. I understand you can recover them with the null modem cable but my question is why does it get stuck in the first place? Is it a fault from manufacturer?

Anything can have problems like this but normally there is a reason like recently flashed firmware or sometimes it can be a problem with the satellite cable (a short).
Has there been any change just before it started acting up like this?
If not, turn off and unplug from mains and remove satellite cable and plug back in and see if it starts without failing.
If it makes no difference then you will need to flash via null modem cable.
