    skyboxf3 psu

Thats the second one Ive blew. Anyone had any positive results by fitting a new fleebay psu? Think I might give it a bash. These wee boxes are fine when left alone. Once you start farting about with them then you really are asking for trouble.

Quick update. Took the psu out of the one working one I have left and fitted to both the fried ones. Both booted up ok. psu now back in original and working fine. Two psu's now ordered from fleebay. Will update when fitted.

Have you looked at the capacitors on the PSU to see if the tops of any of them are bulging or leaking?

Can you see any other damage to any other components on the board?

Cheap capacitors were used on these boxes, so they don't last very long.

Stick them up on Ebay instead of binning them. Someone might be able to get them working.

I reckon if I could find the source of the problem I'd be able to fix it. Removing caps and resoldering new ones in place shouldnt be a problem. I had a general look but other than a burnt bit of solder where the 240v plug inlet is soldered to I couldnt see anything. If I could get a schematic of the psu board that would be ideal. I'm thinking about taking them into work and have a good look with my colleagues. I wont throw them out.

One of my PSU stopped working on a F5S, swapped it out for a netgear one with the same voltage etc and it's been working fine for months now.

We are talking about the PCB board inside the digibox and not just the power supply. Are you?

A common problem with PCB soldered mains sockets, is that the solder joint around the pin of the socket breaks away from the rest of the track, due to the leverage action of wiggling the mains lead. It is not always easy to see as it is nearly always a neat break around the solder blob.

The burn mark might be an indication that it has been arcing.

Give the mains socket a wiggle & see if you notice the solder joint moving up & down.

Ok,Im going to wait until I get the new ones from ebay before I take a look and the burnt out ones. I did notice a bit of burning at the solder blob(underside) of the pin socket of one of the boards. This board was 'arcing' when wiggling the power supply whilst on. Is it simply a matter of fixing the solder joint or you think something else will have gone? I never got a good look at the capacitors,I'll do this once I've got the boards back out to fit the new ones. It certainly would be handy to be able to fix them and keep them as replacements.

It does sound as though it could be the problem I described if you were hearing the arcing sound while wiggling the mains lead.

What I normally do for a repair, is solder a piece of wire from the solder joint on the track that has lifted to the next solder joint along the track. This gives it some flexibility. I do the same for the other pin on the mains connector as well, even if it is OK, as the same thing could happen to that one over time.

It's hard to say if anything else has been damaged. The only way to know is to repair the track on the mains socket & try it again.

Why did I not think of that? Many years ago I worked in the 'wire add' department for IBM... It will be early next week before I try it. Would you solder the wire topside or underside? I'll let you know how I get on.

Skybox f3 psu + hdmi issue

                        *UPDATE*

PCB's came today. I fitted them and both boxes are powering up.

B1 - This is the one that had burnt solder at mains socket. Replaced board, powered up then hooked up to tv with hdmi and working fine.

B2 - HDMI not working but able to get it going through RGB to scart cable. Having looked at the board I cant see any issue with capacitors or mains. There is a brown stain on the board around a microchip? Not sure if this is the issue with HDMI as that looks to be powered by an entirely different PCB although could be linked? The main issue was it wouldnt power up and that is now fixed with board replacement.

I could maybe swap HDMI boards round to see if issue goes away but not sure if I want to.

anyone ever had issues with hdmi?

Isn't the HDMI socket connected straight to the mainboard? I know that the Ethernet socket has it's own board.

I have seen Skyboxes being sold on Ebay with non-working HDMI. Looks like a fairly common fault.
