Think I have bricked my box

I have just tried to update the channel list on my v5s while I got ready for the boxing and now it is stuck on load................

I have read the guides to recovering my box but need a null modem cable. Where is the best place to get one from??

THere must be some dodgy firmware about as i bricked an f5s twice by doing the channel list. Proper pain in the arse! Switched to a libertview v8s with no issues since...

Hi The thing to remember is that when you do a firmware/channel update the first thing it does is it clears the memory from receiver and if you have a dodgy firmware/channel list then box will become bricked as it wont have a memory to load. This is the reason why you must never switch off receiver during an upgrade. A lot of receivers today do upgrades via the network and if your internet goes down for any reason then your box may become bricked. One of the reasons i dont download channel lists anymore is because i had similar problems years ago.. i use the blind scan facility to create my own channel lists.

          Regards

99% of the time these make of receivers are bricked with a channel list is basically because people will not follow the correct procedure to load one, i am sure there is a guide from one of the regular Users of the OpenBox range such as Hadron who has detailed how to upgrade, From memory i use to delete the existing list first through the menu then load the new channel list and then if Favourites where not showing rest with blue button would cure that problem

people don't realize that the tpprog.dbs file actually has 2 chunks embedded. If you use split_dbs on it you will see it dissects to a .udf file and a .rom file. The .udf was used in the old days on other models to update the sat/channel list via the rs232 editor-loader.The .rom portion is different from receiver to receiver,so if you load a channel list from another model, the fun begins.
It may work or it may brick the box.
I never load a foreign channel list,I blindscan every day looking for wildfeeds anyway. If I do load a channel list it is one that I made myself on that model receiver.

I have updated channel list on all versions of Open/Skybox without deleting old lists and never had any bricking problems, however I do email the list to a number of other who with a recent update had bricking problems, about 5% bricked the box. Luckily I have recovered all bar one which had some previous loading problems.

I think its just pot luck.

I bricked my s10 the 1st day I got it by loading a channel list from a forum site.
Took me the rest of the day to fix it.

Iv'e got a feeling its the USB sticks people use....just my thinking

i have used Aj's list for the past few years on many many boxes & never bricked one of them (f'3 f'5 v8 v6 ect)
i always use the same USB stick (Scandisk Cruzer 8 gig) & always delete the old channel list before the update & reboot the box.

It could be user error but they are so easy to do i cannot see how......
It cannot be Aj's list otherwise there would be 100's if not 1000' of bricked box's every update

Which only leaves the USB or the box its self

Hi mate, the only one I would recommend is-http://www.amazon.co.uk/Startech-1-Port-Modem-Serial-Adapter/dp/B008634VJY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1433178862&sr=8-1&keywords=icusb232ftn
It's the one I use so I know it works. It is RS232 to USB so can be used with modern laptops/desktops.
Make sure you use the correct software to recover and update the box.
There are posts on the forum and youtube to show you how to perform the repair /update.

Cheers for all the advice guys.

I finally got round to "unbricking" my box yesterday. Followed the tutorial in the stickies and it took me about 20 mins in total.

I used this adapter too and it worked a treat http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...f_rd_i=desktop
