hi can anyone tell me if you can use a rs232 to usb converter on a laptop to factory reset a skybox all help is welcome thanks guys n girls

I (and a few others) have used this one with the Prolific PL2303HX rev D chipset:-

It needs to be used with a null modem cable like this one:-

I have used that prolific adapter myself. You will also need the null modem cable to use with it.

Would these work with the F5S to restore the box when it gets stuck on 'load'? I'd like to fix it myself in future instead of having to send it back to eBay seller.

Yep. Should work with all skybox/openbox/libertview boxes (although I'm not sure about the F6, X5 & V8 combo boxes. They might use a different method).
