New to openbox hoping someone can help to put me in the right direction

Hi I've looked into this a bit but I'm getting really confused,, there seems to be so much choice that my head is spinning!!!
I'm hoping that some of you good people out there can point me in the right direction of what openbox to get, would love to be able to use it like a sky+ box but don't know which box if any can do the same thing.
Also read that you have to give a ***** to get the channels, but also heard that they can be unreliable!!

Hopefully someone can shed a bit of light on the details and on this and the equipment.
    Many thanks taf
