S11 Sound Problem

Hi,

I recently had to change the psu on my OpenBox S11 which had overheated. I swapped it out for a new one and re-seated the heatsink on the cpu which was only half seated! The box powers up by I have no sound - I've tried all settings and a hard reset but to no avail.

I've chekced and my box is not a clone (0D7E chip) and I'm currently using C2HS2-11-07-31:0091CMT firmware.

Would a new firmware flash perhaps do the trick? If so is there a link to a latest firmware for this box.

Thanks - I tried a new firmware from the d/l section. Flashed the box and scanned for channels. I get a picture and subtitles but still no video. Any ideas?

You mean no sound? Are you using hdmi? and have you tried scart?

Ok that's done something. I switched to Scart and had sound, switched back to HDMI and I got sound after unplugging and plugging the HDMI. Then I was only getting sound for about 5 seconds before it cut out, I switched the audio from tpye in settings and it seems to be ok - strange. Need to give it a good test later to check it's ok.

By the way, I re-seated the metal heat-sink with some new thermal paste - 3 days ago. The heat sink is still lose though. if I nudge it with my finger it moves. Should it be fixed?

I spoke too soon, a reboot and the box loses the sound again. Tried scart again and I have sound but now don't get any sound via HDMI whatsoever. I think this box might be fit for the bin!

I haven't got one handy atm but you probably used liquid thermal paste hence movement. As for hdmi problem it's more than likely a gpu problem [Hardware on board] but should be ok for a while yet using scart.

I just removed the heatsink and cleaned off the excess thermal paste - when I re-botted the sound worked. Box is ok but have had a couple of reboots out of the blue. Is the chip that the heat sink sits on the CPU or GPU. The heatsink is getting very hot, is that usual?

Is this really worth all this trouble ?? for a few quid you can get a far superior E2 box

I have a Vu+ Solo - this is a 2nd box that I use occasionally. It's not about the cost but has become a challenge, I prefer to try and fix/repair things than putting them in a land fill because I don't have the patience to have a go at fixing it. Even if it can't be saved it would be interesting (for me at least) to learn what the cause of the problem is.

The heatsink sits on the cpu. A heat reflow on gpu may get it working again but it may also break it as it's possible the board may have more underlying faults. As maca says not an economical repair. hth

As DOUGALMCD says, you have used thermal paste designed for use with a CPU that is mechanically held down with a spring or clip. You need to use thermal adhesive, or thermal glue.

rule of thumb is if you burn your finger on the heatsink,time for a fan.
I have a fan on my s10,the old pc 486 type cpu fan that runs off 12v
