hi i am possibly being thick ,but i have read that the openbox v5s and the skybox f5s are the same machines in a different casing ...is this the case and can i update my f5s to get channel upgrades by network using the v5s firmware ...thanks in advance for the advice.

The good thing is if you try it It will just say Firmware Mismatch. So no harm in trying BUT try and find the Firmware for the Box you want to Upgrade.
There will be firmware here if you look.

flashed he firmware download for a v5s and the f5s works perfectly and i can now update the channel list via the network .....no more downloading and transferring to usbComment
