    DM800 v D500

    Okay guys

as I have previousily asked about which box to get. Looks like people like the DM800 and Dreambox 500.

So what is the difference between the 2 boxes (not really intrested in HD btw)

    Thanks

well the hd is the one big difference between a dm500 and a dm800 ,but you can also add a hard disk drive to a dm800 which means you can record and add a decent epg guide .

if your only interested in viewing standard definition channels (sd) and not bothered about high definition (hd ) or recording or a good epg then the dm500s is all you need . also a dm500s is about ?100 cheaper than a dm800s ,if you would be interseting in recording and a good epg you could go for a box inbetween which is the dm600 . the dm600 is sd but you can record and store a good epg on the hard disk drive (you should get one for about ?100 ),you should be aware that a hard disk drive may not come with a box as standard and if so you will need to pay extra for it .
i love it when a dreambox comes together.

DM800 has usb slot while DM500 doesn't and imaging DM800 is easier than DM500 which must be done through com port

Thanks for that great insight mate! very useful information
EPG - Is this just a program guide? ON the D500, would it atleast show what program is on when I scan through channels? Also could they be organised into catogories like Sports, Kids etc?

What would be a good price for this box? Where is the best place to pick it up?

Thanks for your info mate, is it difficult to image a DM500 then?
Also do you think there would be application support for the D500 in the foreseable future?

Is there really a ?100 diff between the 500 and 800? I got my mate a dm800hd (clone) recently that came in at around ?120 so ?20 for the 500 makes it real tempting to get 1 for the bedroom

I'm off to have a look

I forgot to add, once you've seen HD you won't want to go back. I was never really a HD fan as I've been using cable boxes for all these years but after using the dm800hd and having HD I would never ever go back.

For me, who was a newbie to this box back in April this year the dm800hd has been a great box and if you have the time is a great box to tinker with.

I've been crafting and modding various skins and in general have been playing around with Enigma2 coding aswell.

yes the epg is the program guide ,you get the program on now and the program on next as standard ,some images allow a 3 day epg on a dm500s . you can organise your channels into categories as you say (which is what we call bouquets ) you can create them yourself with the box remote or you can download bouquets allready setup for you such as sgt flipflops bouquets .

im talking about the dm800hd pro with the latest tuner they cost more than a standard dm800 hd,you can get a dm500s delivered for some where in the region of ?60 to ?70 (you can get them cheaper from asia ) a standard dm800 can be got for about ?120 (that probably wont include delivery ) a dm800hd pro will most certainly cost more and if buying from asia you will most likely have to pay vat to the customs .

Easy to image the DM500, just annoying you have to get serial cable and you can't use usb or web, That is all.
Support has been and will never end for all dreamboxes and not only DM500

are you sure that includes delivery and what ever customs charge you at the other end ?. and are you 100% sure its a rev m tuner as older tuners can cause severe freezing picture problems .

i wouldnt recommend them ,they are cheap and have fast delivery but they will not honour a guarantee so if the box arrives faulty your money is gone and you may have an expensive doorstop .please check and read as many satellite forums and threads as you can before buying ,safety first .
